London Hippodrome to become a casino
The London Hippodrome, one of the British capital’s most historic live entertainment venues is to become a casino. The first attempts to secure a gaming license were turned down, but one has now been granted and plans for the new casino are steaming ahead.
The Hippodrome building was built in 1900, and resides on the corner of Charing Cross Road and Leicester Square in the City of Westminster, London. It was first used to host water circuses and variety performances, giving its first circus show on 15th January 1900. In 1958, the original interior was demolished and it was converted into the cabaret restaurant ‘Talk of the Town’ which featured many popular artistes of that time, and lasted until 1982 when it was renovated again and reopened as a nightclub/restaurant called ‘The London Hippodrome’ by nightclub tycoon Peter Stringfellow. The current re-development plans for a casino are set to be completed by 2010.
Audrey Lewis, the Westminster City Council’s cabinet member for customers and neighbourhoods was quoted as saying “We support the gaming justices granting of the gaming license to Hippodrome Casino Ltd. We would be happy to see a casino established at the Hippodrome as we feel that a casino will provide visitors to the venue with a more integrated night out, rather than encouraging people to drink heavily on the site, as might happen if it were to become a bar or nightclub. In the past, when the venue was run as a nightclub, there were a series of problems on the premises, which included fights and even a shooting and we feel that the venue will serve people better and be safer as a casino.”
