John McCain’s Casino Chips luncheon

By | Jun 26, 2008

Las Vegas casino magnates are today hosting a luncheon fund raiser for Senator John McCain behind the guarded gates of the posh Vegas Southern Highlands Golf Club, in one of Vegas’ most exclusive neighbourhoods.

Donors will be putting up tens of thousands of dollars to get face time with the presumptive Republican nominee.  The luncheon is by invite only, and some names included as hosts are casino resort mega-developer Steve Wynn, MGM Grand CEO Terry Lanni, and Republican media consultant Sig Rogich. Las Vegas Sands chairman Sheldon Adelson, one of the world’s richest men, and Sands CEO William Weidner.

At today’s event, high-rollers who contribute $33,100 will get a private audience with McCain at a special ‘roundtable private discussion’ at Rogich’s home located next to the club’s private 18-hole golf course. Donors must pay a minimum of $1,000 to attend the main luncheon, $2,300 for a photo with McCain, and $10,000 to attend a VIP reception.

To be able to get around the $2,300 contributions limit, the campaign is billing it as benefiting the ‘McCain Victory 2008’ event, meaning the contributions will be split between McCain’s campaign, the Republican National Committee, and various GOP state parties, to comply with federal campaign finance law.

Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. was recently named one of the ‘Best Companies for Diverse Graduates’ by Diversity Edge Magazine. Harrah’s is the only company in the casino entertainment industry to receive a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Corporate Equality Index, and is ranked 11 out of 20 companies that made the 2008 list.

Discussions are reported to be under way to revive a casino ferry service between New York City and Atlantic City.  The last time any such casino ferry operated such services between New York and Atlantic City was 18 years ago, when wobbly-legged gamblers staggered off the decks, their faces pale from seasickness. Not surprising that the ferry flopped after a short run. High seas and nausea amongst passengers seemed to be a contributing factor to the services demise.

It is estimated it would take 12 to 14 months to build a new ferry that could give passengers a smoother ride, which would mean the service would not begin until 2009 at the earliest. The new ferry cruising service is being promoted as an easy alternative to the gruelling, 130-mile car or bus trip on New York’s congested roads to Atlantic City. Compared to about a three-hour ordeal on the highway, the ferry runs would take a little more than two hours.
