It appears that the State Gaming Control Board and Nevada Gaming Commission did not approve a recently proposed financial transfer between Edward Torres and Wayne Newton, co-owners of the Aladdin Hotel, which would have seen Torres buy out the entertainer’s one-half interest.
However, it is reported that dozens of stunned gamblers at the Aladdin Hotel Casino last Thursday were seen rushing to the casino cage clutching gaming chips in their hands, only to be told by burly security guards that they must wait until 8 a.m. Friday to cash them in.
State gaming control agents and Metro police surrounded the casino as pit bosses supervised the simultaneous shutdown of all gaming which lasted half an hour. The lights were turned off and slot machines taped over.
Some employees were reportedly openly crying, and shaking their heads in disbelief, whilst tourists watched in amazement as each pit closed. A three piece band played in darkness during the half-hour shutdown. Casino staff were turning up for shifts only to find that they no longer had a job.
After an official red ‘closed’ sign lit up, and several announcements were made over the loud speaker system that the hotel rooms, restaurants and theatre for the performing arts would remain open.
Aladdin attorney Richard Wright reportedly said he was unsure what legal actions would be immediately taken but speculated the hotel could ultimately continue operating without gaming, similar to the Jockey Club.
